Body odor (osmidrosis) is a perceived unpleasant smell our bodies can give off when bacteria that live on the skin break down sweat into acids, some say it is the smell of bacteria growing on the body, but it really is the result of bacteria breaking down protein into certain acids.
Body odor usually becomes evident if measures are not taken when a human reaches puberty - 14-16 years of age in females and 15-17 years of age in males. People who are obese, those who regularly eat spicy foods, as well as individuals with certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, are more susceptible to having body odor.
Causes of Body Odor
According to wikipedia the formation of body odors is mainly caused by skin glands excretions and bacterial activity. Between the different types of skin glands, the human body odor is primarily the result of the apocrine sweat glands, which secrete the majority of chemical compounds needed for the skin flora to metabolize it into odorant substances.
How to manage your Body odor
- Be calm: When you are nervous or angry there is a very high tendency you will sweat, and when you sweat bacteria are activated thus producing bad smell. So you must learn to be calm at all times as this will go a long way in helping you to control bad odor.
- Stay Clean: If you improve your personal hygiene then you will reduce odor formation. Take your baths regularly with anti-bacterial soaps and wash off the bacteria that might likely produce odor. It is also important you put on a clean cloth daily so you can be fresh at all times.
- Avoid spicy foods: I need you to get it right, I am not asking you not to eat spicy foods at all just manage when you do well. Do not eat it when you are about to go out or when you are actually out as it tends to make you sweat a lot. Spicy foods also contain sulfur that can mix with your sweat and produce a disturbing smell.
- Always make sure you dry out, immediately after taking your bath.
- Drink alot of water.
- You must by all means quit smoking.
